Tiffany T, a T that bars

Tiffany T is a T that learned to stay a T. Tiffany & Co. wrote a bar as jewelry — gold already crossed as a letter, already held, a T worn as the whole sit on the wrist or at the neck. You meet the T first. The house name arrives after the bar. There is no free house still to set beside the name. The sit is older than the logo: gold that has already agreed to be a T.

A Cloisters tau is the sit in one letter. A T already drawn in gold, the crossbar at the top, the stem already a hold, figures as the only grammar inside the metal. You would feel that T before you named a century. Not a knot that ties. Not a nail that bends. Not a coil that winds. Gold that has already been written as a T — a bar you can read, a letter worn as the jewel. That is what Tiffany T still protects: a T you meet as a T, gold worn as the hold.

The temperament is the bar that stays barred. A knot would have asked for a tie. A nail would have been a single line. A clover would have been another body. The barred gold is the sentence. Tiffany T keeps that sentence as a T.

A Late Roman gold crossbow brooch keeps the same appetite as a quieter T. A long openwork arm, then a crossbar already written as three finials — gold that has agreed to sit as a T at the join. You would meet that bar before you counted a setting. The grammar is the crosspiece. Tiffany T writes it as a modern sit — yellow gold or a cooler metal, the same hold: gold that has agreed to be a T, a jewel you feel as a letter that stays a letter.
