Onyx as a black field
A black field. Onyx is this season’s cool, dark sit — a night the stone already keeps, the metal only a frame around it. Lapis keeps a night blue, one deep field that has already chosen a color. Enamel keeps a painted skin, glass fired onto gold until the color is a coat. Jet, if it is mentioned at all, is another dark, a fossil black with a different body. Onyx keeps a black field. You meet the night in the stone before you meet a mount.

Oval cabochons hold that field before any gold arrives. Polished black, a dome the light can rest on, a surface that does not break into a spark. You would see the night before you asked for a setting. A lapis dome would have been a blue you could name from across a room. An enamel plaque would have been a skin someone laid on. These stones are the dark itself. The season sit is the field, and the frame can wait its turn.
What the season is wearing is a black that does not need a story painted over it. A cool chalcedony, metal only the chair when a chair arrives. Onyx is the body. The night is already in it.
A black the gold agrees to hold
A pair of cufflinks spends the field as jewelry. Faceted onyx, a black cut into planes, the gold a bright rim and a link behind. You would meet that night at the cuff before you named a hinge. The facets do not paint the stone. They open a window into a dark that was already there.

The rim is only gold
Enamel would have covered the metal with a fired color. These stones leave the metal as the line, and keep the night in the onyx. You would turn a cufflink and the black would stay the black. The gold can catch a room. The first fact is still the field it circles. Nothing in the polish invents the hue. The stone was already written that way.
A link can change. The field does not. Two cufflinks, one night, the gold only agreeing to hold what the onyx already was.
The same night, framed in a museum
A brooch from about 1860 finishes the thought as a jewel that has kept its dark. An oval of onyx, a profile the night agreed to carry, a gold frame that only circles the field. You would feel the black before you followed the head. The carving is a mark inside the stone. The field is what the gold was asked to hold.

Already the night
The brooch does not change the stone’s job. A dome on a cloth would have been enough night. A museum brooch spends the same field at the throat, a cool dark the gold has agreed to circle. You would meet that black before you traced a curl of the frame.
Lapis would have held a blue. Enamel would have held a painted skin. This one holds a field of onyx, and lets the night stay when the brooch turns. The gold is the chair. The season is the color the stone already is.
That is the season sit. Onyx as a black field. Cabochons whose domes are already the night. Cufflinks whose gold only rims that dark. A brooch that frames the same field — a stone you wear as night.
